Weller Creek begins at a sewer outfall at Central Road east of Busse Road in Mount Prospect and runs approximately 5.7 miles to its joining with the Des Plaines River in the City of Des Plaines. Approximately 25 years ago, the Village installed stabilization measures, including sheet piling, gabions, A-jacks, and vegetation from Elmhurst Road (IL Route 83) to School Street based on the 1996 Streambank Stabilization Report recommendations. The section from School Street to the eastern Village boundary was not studied as it was previously stabilized with monoslab paver blocks.
Erosion is again occurring along the banks of Weller Creek from Elmhurst Road (IL Route 83) to the Village boundary. The Village is performing a new study that will document the existing conditions of the creek and recommend maintenance actions as well as replacement measures to restore and stabilize the banks and minimize future erosion.
For the purposes of this study, Weller Creek will be divided into four reaches. The reaches are described below:
Reach 1: Elmhurst Road (IL Route 83) to Emerson Street (1,700’)
Reach 2: Emerson Street to William Street (1,950’)
Reach 3: William Street to George Street (950’)
Reach 4: George Street to Village boundary (700’)
Total length approximately 5,300’
The study will document streambank erosion, sedimentation, and storm sewer outfalls along Weller Creek between Elmhurst Road (IL Route 83) and the eastern Village boundary near Mount Prospect Road.
