The Village of Mount Prospect is launching a pilot LED exterior light giveaway program entitled “Light a Light, Safe at Night” pilot program is in response to community feedback given in the 2023 Community Survey. Survey results found that streetlighting was of high priority. The use of small-scale residential lighting by front doors and lamp posts are capable of brightening neighborhood streets and sidewalks in areas without street lighting. A coordinated use of personal property lighting by front doors and lamp post are an immediate and intermediate solution opposed to more expensive overhead street lighting. LED lights will provide an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to meet the Village’s goals of Increased Visibility, Crime Deterrence, and Community Confidence.
The LED lights will be available at Village Hall (50 S. Emerson St., 3rd Floor - Village Administration) Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 AM to 5 PM. The number of bulbs is limited, residents are asked to limit themselves to one.
In exchange for participation in the pilot program, one bulb (1500 Lumen – 14 Watt – 4000 Kelvin A19 Light Bulb) will be provided per address during this pilot program and must agree to the following terms :
- Must be a resident of Mount Prospect.
- Execute an application form.
- Agree to using the provided light bulb in either your front yard lamp post or next to your front door.

- Crime Deterrence: Adequate lighting in residential areas, parking lots, and public spaces may deter criminal activities by eliminating dark spots where perpetrators might hide.
- Community Confidence: Residents feel safer and more confident when walking or commuting at night in well-lit areas, which may encourage community engagement and use of public spaces.
