The Village of Mount Prospect encourages our community to walk and bike not only as a means of exercising but also to get to and from work, shops, restaurants, and other destinations. This project aims to enhance pedestrian safety and promote walking and biking along an important corridor in our community, Algonquin Road. It also fulfills a key component of the Village’s Strategic Plan to expand our pedestrian and bike network and provide multi-modal transportation options.
Algonquin Road is a five-lane roadway under the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) jurisdiction. The section from Dearborn Court to Elmhurst Road (IL Route 83) is within the Village limits. To the west is Arlington Heights, and to the east is Des Plaines. 20,000 to 30,000 vehicles per day travel on the road in Mount Prospect. Approximately half of the roadway in Mount Prospect currently has sidewalks on both sides of the street. There are marked crosswalks with pedestrian crossing signals at Briarwood Drive, Dempster Street, Busse Road, Linneman Road (partial), and Elmhurst Road (new).
The Village completed a Phase I Preliminary Engineering Study in 2022. The study aimed to evaluate several design options and receive conceptual approval from IDOT. Phase II Design Engineering is expected to begin in 2024 and take approximately 18 months to complete. This phase will accomplish the engineering drawings and specifications to prepare for construction. Construction is expected to begin in 2026 and take approximately one year to complete.
The project includes the following elements:
- Construct an 8’ wide path along the entire north side of Algonquin Road in Mount Prospect that bicyclists and pedestrians can use.
- Construct a 5’ wide sidewalk on the south side of Algonquin Road, which currently does not exist in Mount Prospect.
- Connect to the existing path at the ComEd right-of-way.
- Add marked crosswalks and pedestrian crossing signals at Linneman Road.
- Improve bus stop locations.
- Install roadway lighting where it currently does not exist.
The Village has secured a federal grant to fund a majority of the project. We have been awarded $2,324,768 from the Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality (CMAQ) Program.
