First created in 2009, the South Mount Prospect Sub-Area Plan is a long range planning document covering the southern end of Mount Prospect. Since its original completion, a number of recommendations have hinged on the development of the Metra STAR line, which was proposed to be a 55-mile north-south rail corridor connecting the outer suburbs of the Chicago Metro region to O’Hare Airport.  Click here to download a PDF of the 2009 South Mount Prospect Sub-Area Plan.

The STAR Line project did not move forward due to a combination of the high projected capital costs, Metra’s capital budget constraints and lack of available federal funding.  Because of this and a number of other factors, including changes to the economy, recent annexations and the time period since the original plan was created, an update was needed.

During the past several years, the Village has annexed over 220 acres of land within the sub-area, which creates new opportunities for this diverse area.  The intent of the 2020 update was to address and refine the framework of the goals, objectives, and implementation program to create an inclusive south side, and a ‘desired future,’ both for residents and businesses. Current planning documents which helped guide the 2020 initiative to update the plan, included the Public Transportation System Plan (adopted 2009), Bicycle Plan (adopted 2012), Strategic Plan (adopted 2014), and Comprehensive Plan (adopted 2017).

A key part of the planning process was incorporating input from the public, thus a variety of engagement activities were done in the summer of 2018 to gather input from residents and business owners within sub-area boundaries. The Village thanks those who participated, as we received over 300 responses!

The update was approved at the regular meeting of the Village Board on December 1, 2020. To view the adopted document, click the link.
