The Village of Mount Prospect is upgrading the existing crosswalk at the intersection of Central Road and Weller Lane (Melas Park)by replacing the existing post-mounted rectangular rapid flashing beacons with overhead and post-mounted ones. The original crosswalk improvements were installed in 2015. The latest best practice is to include mast arm-mounted overhead rectangular rapid flashing beacons, along with post-mounted ones, to increase visibility for vehicles. The improvements will match the recently constructed crosswalk at Central Road and Cathy Lane. The overhead rectangular rapid flashing beacons will provide greater visibility to vehicles and pedestrians crossing Central Road.

Phase I is complete and consisted of prep work for the overhead sign installation including foundations, conduit and ADA ramp improvements.  

Phase II will take place from Friday March 20th to Friday March 27th.  During this time, the crosswalk will be closed on weekdays from 7 AM to 3:30 PM while work is taking place.  When the crosswalk is closed, please use the traffic signal at Busse Road to cross Central Road.  This work will consist of installing the mast arms and new rectangular rapid flashing beacons.

Will the crossing remain open during construction?

Yes, the crossing will remain open during construction except for approximately 3 weeks while work is being done.  Pedestrians are to use the traffic signal at the intersection of Busse Road and Central Road as a detour route. The crosswalk is required to be closed as the existing rectangular rapid flashing beacons will not be operational during construction. There is a long time between construction phases during which the crosswalk will be reopened.
