Testing Information

Applications for the position of firefighter/paramedic are accepted after a testing date has been established.

General Requirements

  1. Age: 20 to under 35 years of age as of the date of the written exam, but must be 21 prior to appointment, unless otherwise provided by the Rules and Regulations and/or Illinois Statute 
  2. Education: High School Diploma or evidence of a GED equivalence diploma.
  3. Driver’s License: Each applicant must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and possess or be able to obtain a valid class B non-CDL/
  4. Residency: Must be a United States Citizen.
  5. Certifications: Candidates must be certified as an Accredited Basic Operations Fire Fighter (Firefighter II) at the time of application. If not already licensed as an EMT P, candidates must be licensed as a Provisional Paramedic in good standing by the State of Illinois pursuant to applicable statutes and regulations at the time of application. If a Provisional Paramedic when conditional offer of employment is extended, they must obtain National Registry EMT-P licensure prior to completion of the post offer background investigation.
  6. CPAT: Proof of completion of the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) conducted by a licensed CPAT testing agency is required at the time of application. CPAT testing must have been completed no earlier than one (1) year from date of application. Proof of EMT-B or EMT-P licensure at the time of hire.

Step 3: Take Physical Exam

Pass Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) that includes an agility and strength test.

Step 4: Preliminary Eligibility list is established by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners as part of the background investigation

Step 5: Candidate Review

If a background investigation is clear, a conditional offer is made. Pass medical exam including a psychological examination.


Paid-On-Call (POC) Firefighter Program

The Mount Prospect Fire Department began as a Volunteer organization on September 29, 1913. In 1961, the Village Board voted to make the Department full-time, but “supplemented by ‘paid on call’ firemen as needed”. The POC firefighters are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to provide assistance to the Fire Department and Village when requested. The POC members provide extra support for structure fires, storm damage, power outages, flooding, and other community incidents.

In addition, the POC members are very involved with the community and Public Education events.  This program has provided individuals an opportunity to join the fire service and use the opportunity as a stepping-stone towards a career as a full-time firefighter. 

 Paid-On-Call (POC) Applicant Requirements:

  • 19 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License
  • Reside within 6.0 miles of Mount Prospect Village Hall, at 50 S. Emerson St.
  • Pass a background check, pre-employment physical, and drug test
