Community Development/Building & Inspection Services - Compliance Inspector

The Village of Mount Prospect, Illinois, population 56,852 is located along Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line, 23 miles from downtown Chicago and five miles north of O’Hare International Airport.  The Village is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Compliance Inspector in the Community Development Department.

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspects existing multi-family dwellings and premises for compliance with Village codes.
  • Regularly inspects and investigates Village areas for code compliance with property maintenance, health, zoning, nuisance, and sign code violations.
  • Prepares notice of inspections and letters to the responsible party that inform them of the problem, the violation, time limit for compliance, and the recommended correction.
  • Inspects all temporary food events. This may include working on weekends.
  • Investigates and attempts to resolve disputes between landlords and tenants relative to the Village’s tenant/landlord ordinance.
  • Submits periodical status reports on progress of housing inspections and outstanding complaints and requests for Housing Code information.
  • Investigates and resolves service requests of reported property maintenance, health, zoning, nuisance, and sign code violations for all properties in the Village.

The ideal candidate would possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience in code enforcement, building construction, environmental health education or law enforcement work.  The candidate must understand sanitary provisions of the state public health code and of modern environmental sanitation practices. The candidate must have the ability to solve complex challenges in the community and communicate effectively with the residents, customers, and their co-workers in a team-oriented environment.

The preferred candidate should have an ICC/AACE Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification or ability to be obtained within six (6) months of placement. This certification must be maintained for the duration of employment. Or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience.

Starting salary for this position is $66,726 annually, depending on qualifications. Excellent benefits include IMRF pension, holiday, sick, personal and vacation time, comprehensive health plans, life insurance, and 457 retirement plan.
