Public Works Department - Night Mechanic (Emergency Vehicle Technician)

The Mount Prospect Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill a night mechanic position (shift is Monday – Friday, 3:30pm – 12:00am).   The position performs a variety of mechanical tasks associated with the maintenance and repair of emergency vehicles (fire apparatus), light/heavy duty trucks both gasoline and diesel, off-road equipment both gasoline and diesel. 

Essential Functions:

The essential job functions performed include highly skilled work on the Village’s various fire apparatus, which includes a 100-foot tower.  Work includes diagnoses and repair of complex mechanical issues; performs preventative maintenance on fire apparatus. In addition, the position performs tasks associated medium/heavy truck braking systems that include hydraulic and air.  Furthermore, the position is responsible for maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems, computerized fuel injection, computerized transmissions, and computerized braking systems associated with medium /heavy trucks.  The position is also responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining automobiles, light duty trucks, tractors and all Public Works related equipment.

Position also performs a variety of tasks necessary to achieve the goals of the Public Works Department, as determined by the Public Works Director, using manual labor and construction trade skills; operates one or more types of equipment including snowplows, loaders, forklift, motorized tools, saws, etc.; and other duties as assigned.  Additional functions include water main break repairs, sewer repairs, tree trimming, tree removals, brush chipping, landscape maintenance and the operation of equipment including backhoes, front end loaders, street sweepers and other equipment as assigned.  On call and overtime work assigned by rotation among all mechanic employees.  Overtime work is mandatory.

Educational Requirements:

Associate’s degree in automotive technology or a related field required.

Experience Requirements:

A minimum of three (3) years’ experience working on fire apparatus is required. Must possess Master EVT Certification or the ability to obtain within two (2) years of employment. Must have or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment Medium/Heavy Truck Master ASE Certification.  Certifications must be maintained during term of employment.  Must obtain a valid Illinois CDL Class B vehicle operator’s license within 90 days of employment.

Starting Rate:  $40.98 - $55.41 depending on qualifications. Shift differential for nighttime hours.

Mandatory residency requirement within one year of employment (Randall Road to Route 14 to Route 176 on the west, Route 176 on the north, Lake Michigan on the east, Lake Shore Drive and Roosevelt Road; westward to Ogden Avenue (Route 34); southwesterly and westerly to Route 59; north to its nexus with Route 64 and then westerly to a terminus at the intersection of Route 64 and Randall Road.)

Any offer of employment will be conditional upon the successful completion of a pre-employment physical, which includes a drug and alcohol screen.  Mandatory residency requirement within one year of employment (Randall Road on the west, Route 176 on the north, Lake Michigan on the east,  Route 64 to the south).
